Disconnected: Parenting Teens in a MySpace World
Parents worry they don’t have the understanding or training to be able to care for their kids in a world that is increasingly superficial, politicized, and performance driven. Disconnected makes the concepts and strategies described in the bestselling Hurt: Inside the World of Today’s Teenagers accessible to parents. After the overwhelming response to Hurt, authors Chap and Dee Clark here equip parents with an up-to-date, realistic parenting book that doesn’t ignore the harsh realities of adolescent life. It builds a foundation for parents by describing exactly how things have changed, takes them through the various developmental stages their children go through, and gives them workable paradigms for parenting.

I wish I had been given this book 4 years ago, when my oldest daughter was entering the teenage years! Chap Clark knows teens & their parents. All of his books are excellent, yet I would most highly recommend this one for parents of teens who want to know how to connect with their son or daughter in this most challenging period of growing up. Much more than just tips and techniques, this book has helped me and many of my friends understand more about where my teenage daughter (I have 3!) is coming from, & how to enter her world and love her well exactly where she is.
Thank you, Chap Clark!!

Stealing MySpace: The Battle to Control the Most Popular Website in America
A fast-paced and deeply reported look at the unlikely success of MySpace, the Web 2.0 phenomenon, and the drama surrounding one of the biggest deals of the Internet age. Barely funded, technologically inept, conceptually derivative, and driven by rivalries, the company that was to morph into the biggest Internet site in the world had an unlikely beginning. This is the fascinating and surprising story that includes all the elements of a great business narrative: obsessive characters from co-founders Tom Anderson and Chris DeWolfe to Rupert Murdock, relentless and unlikely innovation, and dizzying back room deal-making; all centered around an epic battle for control.Book Description
A few years ago, MySpace.com was just an idea kicking around a Southern California spam mill. Scroll down to the present day and MySpace is one of the most visited Internet destinations in America, displaying more than 40 billion webpage views per month and generating nearly billion annually for Rupert Murdoch’s online empire. Even by the standards of the Internet age, the MySpace saga is an astounding growth story, which climaxed with the site’s acquisition by Murdoch’s News Corporation in 2005 for a sum approaching one billion dollars. But more than that, it may be the defining drama of the digital era. In Stealing MySpace, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Julia Angwin chronicles the rise of this Internet powerhouse. With an unerring eye, Angwin details how MySpace took the Internet by storm by grabbing the best ideas from around the Web, encouraging pinup stars such as Tila Tequila to make their home on its pages and giving everyone freedom to experiment with online identities–including using somebody else’s identity. Stealing MySpace introduces us to the site’s founders, Chris DeWolfe and Tom Anderson, who dabbled in computer hacking, online pornography, spam, and spyware before starting

Stealing MySpace: The Battle to Control the Most Popular Website in America Reviews

If Variety had a threesome with Wired Magazine and a ColdFusion manual, it would look a lot like this book. It captures a great story of an unlikely internet company (from LA no less) overachieving and does what I think is a great job of walking through the nuances that separate myspace from friendster and a lot of other companies nobody remembers.
I think this would make a fantastic movie as it highlights some over-sized personalities/egos, covers the torn friendships that often happen when startups and $$ are involved and shows how a company can capitalize on a shift in technology (digital pictures/mp3.s + broadband) before most people understand what has happened.

A smart read that digs deep into what makes MySpace unique and why it even matters. Found the “who-dun-it” narrative to be both entertaining (lots of fun, head-shaking anecdotes) and informative (explanation of the industry and the money trail is comprehensive and clear — even for lay people).

Myspace to Sacred Space: God for a New Generation
Recently, MySpace.com has become one of the most-visited Web sites in the world. With millions of young users, this one site has made a giant impact on youth pop culture in just a matter of a few years. At the same time, themes of spirituality pervade our lives. From television to film and popular literature, theology is a burgeoning enterprise in popular culture. In contrast, most churches and denominations are built on eighteenth-century principles, and are fighting to remain relevant to young members. The collective fear is that if the church doesn’t adapt to this new generation, they will be left behind forever. Christian and Amy Piatt believe church leaders have a responsibility to stay tuned in to the values and vernacular employed by the younger generations. MySpace to Sacred Space combines first-hand accounts with case studies from people both within and outside the church, as well as findings from surveys of young adults and their views on spirituality, religion, and modern cultural values. It examines church models that seemed destined for success, yet failed, while also considering ministries that some may not consider legitimate church structures, yet they are reaching people and changing lives forever. Far from tolling the death knell forthe established church, MySpace to Sacred Space is an affirming, hopefull look at the ever-growing need for what the Chrsitian faith can offer the world. Much of the relevance for the twenty-first century church can be found in our oldest traditions. By reconnecting with

Myspace to Sacred Space: God for a New Generation Reviews

My wife and I have just finished reading Christian and Amy Piatt’s book MySpace to Sacred Space. While both of us have read more books on church growth than we can remember (my wife is a pastor), we have rarely come away from any of them as charged and excited about the possibilities for church in the 21st century as we did with this one. Far from being yet another program for growth, MySpace to Sacred Space focuses on the much more ancient and important task of building community. Christian and Amy weave personal stories, experiences, and insights together to illustrate the power of story and community in the life of the church. Whether my wife and I find ourselves planting new churches or helping older congregations revitalize, I am confident that the ideas of MySpace to Sacred Space will be with us for a long time.

Me, MySpace, and I: Parenting the Net Generation
Young people spend hours online each day online, and their abilities to multitask and communicate are often misunderstood by older generations. Dr. Larry Rosen offers a full overview of the various issues young people may experience in their online worlds (cyberbullying, addiction, sexuality, virtual friendships, and more) while at the same time challenging commonly held beliefs that these communities are damaging. Instead of using scare tactics, the book shows parents how to be proactive and anticipate potential problems. With his extensive background in both child development and the impact of technology, Dr. Rosen uses down-to-earth explanations of sound psychological theory, incorporates groundbreaking research, and shows parents and educators how social networking sites like MySpace and Facebook can improve adolescent socialization skills.

MySpace For Dummies Reviews

What is this mysterious place that my children visit daily? Is it safe? Does it have any value to my family or business? This book has provided me with the tools to understand and appreciate the power of MySpace. It is an easy and fascinating read and after completion serves as an excellent user friendly referance manual. Last week I was a technology challenged dork. After reading ‘MySPace for Dummies’ I am now proud to be a MySpace geek. Thank you Ryan Hupfer.

I work with a lot of faith-based nonprofits and the current debate among them is should they use MySpace. This book helps answer the question. With more than 115 million people on the site who need to be touched with your message and moved to join your cause, why wouldn’t you want to reach out to them? This book walks though the basics in the usual great “Dummies” fashion. I was able to read it quickly and afterward set up my profile in just a few minutes. It wasn’t long until I customized my profile and started looking like a pro. Now I am building a network of people and exploring a space that helps me connect with all kinds of people. MySpace seems made to order for nonprofit outreach.

Generation MySpace: Helping Your Teen Survive Online Adolescence
Does it seem like your teen can’t tear herself away from friends on the computer screen (except to text them on her cell phone)? That’s because MySpace, Facebook and YouTube are your son or daughter’s life, not just another passing diversion. All that energy and time spent online is affecting your teen’s life in countless ways, from sexual pressure and privacy to social standing and self-esteem. Some schools are banning online networking sites, yet your child insists they’re “no big deal.” Who’s right? Drawing on personal interviews with hundreds of teens, educator Candice M. Kelsey helps parents assess what they should–and shouldn’t–be worried about when it comes to technology. A landmark book, Generation MySpace is the first guide to the new world of online adolescence, where you’ll discover:
* The Appeal of MySpace: How interaction becomes addictive, and how to stop it from taking control
* Profiles, Adds, and Top 8 Popularity: How “friending” is redefining friendship
* Baring It All: How kids as young as eleven are learning to market themselves–and why they’re looking to celebrities and porn stars first
* The Drug Connection: How social networking has made illicit substances easier for teens to get, and even easier to hide
* From Predators to Cyber-Bullies: How to help your kids protect themselves

4AYN, *H*, 26Y4U, 262, LMIRL, TDTM, WYGOWM, P911, F2T. If you are a parent and you don’t have a clue what any of this means, then you don’t have a clue about what your teenager is up to online. This book is worth the cover price just for pages 61-68. I’m talking eye-opening for a non-digital-age parent… )sigh). Why are 110 million teens signed up with Myspace accounts? What’s the attraction? Who cares! Right? That’swhat I thought… until I read this book. Startling really. This writer has clearly done her research and is not trying to scare parents, but to inform in a sortof ‘you can do this, you can understand your child’s world’ sort of way. On the downside, it’s a little long and perhaps goes into a bit too much depth–but it’s well organized and easy to skip around to find what you want. Despite a few nagging shortcomings this is a book every parent with kids from college-age on down should buy asap. Think your kids are up late at night using the computer for school “research”? Hah. Buy the book.

This is truly a Generation of MySpace with over 80 Million users…My wife got me this book as a present and I read the entire thing within days. This is a must read guide for parent who have teens. This makes a great gift for any mom or dad or anyone who wants to learn about teens and the interent, specifically MySpace!

Amp Your MySpace Page Reviews

I liked this book a lot. When I first pulled it from the bookstore shelf I thought it would be more involved. I thought it would be more like a treatise on the ins and outs of MySpace and how to customize a MySpace profile. It has 16 chapters and an appendix dealing primarily with HTML coding:
1. The basics of updating your profile
2. Using HTML to enhance your page
3. Using CSS to change your profile
4. Images and photos
5. Animate your profile with Flash and more
6. Make your profile multimedia ready
7. Finding third-party templates and plug-ins
8. Blogging
9. Nine more ways to update your profile
10. Growing your circle of friends
11. Contributing to the MySpace community
12. Unleash your inner artist
13. Developing an online following
14. Using MySpace classified advertising and more
15. Marketing your music on MySpace
16. Working the Net for your music group
As I read through the book I saw that it is a wonderful tutorial. It’s kind of like a cookbook. Just start at the beginning and do what it tells you in setting up your MySpace profile and then do exactly what it tells you to do to customize your MySpace presence. What it tells you to do might not tweek your profile the way you want it to ultimately be. But you will learn by doing, and when you finish the book you should be knowledgeable and comfortable with the process so you can go back and redo your presence the way you want it to be.
The beauty of this book is it will ultimately teach you the process of putting together Web pages and Web sites if you let it. Then you will be in a great position to build your company’s own Web site and blogs outside of the MySpace arena. 5 stars!

Some people need to read a book to figure out how to do something…I’m one of those people and this book helped. It’s easy to read and I made changes to myspace webpage as I worked through the book. I’m still not an expert or pro…or good at it, but I got started.
